BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Virtual Brush a model-based approach to synthesizing realistically Chinese calligraphic writings. This approach simulates the physical process of brush stroke creation using a parameterized model which captures the brush 3D geometric parameters, the brush writing hair properties and the variations of ink deposition along a stroke trajectory.

We analyzed some well-known Chinese brush writing styles, to establish the relationship of these writing styles and the modeling process of simulating these writing styles. We presented our formulation of this methodology and the implementation of a software which is capable of simulating some typical calligraphic writing styles on a PC platform. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a physically-based model of a brush is used to synthesize calligraphic writings for different scales.

This approach allows a compact representation for the brush written characters which can be used to reproduce the characters at various levels of detail, with various brush effects. Hence it is applicable for very high quality publishing purpose. We also observe that the induced capability of stroke-trajectory scaling and other transformations are very useful for character fonts, in comparison with outline scaling or imaging techniques. Moreover, this technique will form the basis of a “Virtual Brush” which will allow users to “practice” calligraphy electronically.
