A Structural-Fractal Representation for Chinese Scalable Fonts

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Three techniques are involved in this work.

Firstly, we developed a novel scalable (outline) font representation based on fractal functions. The resulting fonts are compact and can support efficient regeneration. Our fractal representation allows the font characters to be regenerated in any scale and at the same time retain the aesthetic characteristics of brush written characters. This technique is particularly suitable for the encoding of oriental calligraphic characters.

Secondly, we developed techniques for the scalable representation of grey-scale calligraphic (brush-written) characters as well as manuscript. For this work, we exploit the properties of "multi-resolutions coherence", ie. coherent properties that are inherent in multi-resolutions representation of grey scale image. We show that there exists multiresolutions coherent properties in images of calligraphic writings. We develop techniques to automatically capture these properties. These properties can then be exploited in two ways: (a) to synthesize extra fine details when the characters are zoomed up beyond their original resolution; (b) to synthesize fine details of a character from a compressed representation or a low-resolution input (eg. a truncated quad-tree) of the character.

Lastly, we constructed a physically-based brush model for synthesizing calligraphic writings. The resulting brush model is able to capture the physical effects of the writing process due to brush geometry, brush orientations and motions, ink absorption and depositing by the brush hairs. We have shown that our physically-based brush model is able to generate all the aesthetic effects commonly attributed to Chinese calligraphy.
